SHAC Alternative Housing Awards 2018

Bishopsgate, London. Wed 5 Dec 2018

Broadgate security came to talk with the protesters as they set up the protest, moving them down the stairs

and then insisting they didn't tape banners to the wall as they might cause damage. But they told them that

so long as they did this they could stay on the steps for the protest, where it was dry

Outside on the street the rain was coming down. The steps are wide but were quite busy - and people some stopped to talk

At first people kept putting up the banners with tape...

But eventually were persuaded to take them off the walls - or security said they would call the police

 People then held the banners

 and the event began

with some signs to tell people how to react - when to cheer

and when to boo, though I think they would have quite a lot of this anyway, but the signs made it more of

 and interactive experience

The first trophy was awarded after a lengthy and detailed citation to to Sanctuary Housing for Most Rotten Repairs

A resident came to accept London & Quadrant's award for Soaring Service Charges,

and then spoke about how they had treated her

The cup for Senseless Social Cleansing and Dodgy Development went to Peabody, particularly for their work with
Lewisham Council destroying The Old Tidemill Garden in Deptford (and soon also to go the nearby Reginald House0

 A former Peabody resident speaks

A 'Boo' for Notting Hill Genesis for their Rocketing Rents

and the cup is handed over

 More residents speak

St Mungo's award for Punitive Performance Management is put up on the awards board

And the final award as Overall Bullying Bosses goes to Catalyst.

Paul Kershaw of Unite Housing Workers makes the final speech

 The Awards Board

And Nick brings the event to and end

 with a final Cheer!

and a Boo! for the videographer to record.
