We walked past here from the rail replacement bus on our way to the
guest house
The churchyard of an old church now a heritage centre - though we
have never found it open
The Parish Church, built by the Strutts who set up their mill in Belper
-- now partly a museum. The last working mill closed a couple of years ago
Belper is part of a World Heritage Site along the River Derwent with
mills that were at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution.
On the following morning we had time to stroll around the town before getting
the rail replacement bus
and to buy some sandwiches and quiche to eat on the journey, though
not from this shop.
The colours of the paint are even more subdued than these pictures
- and the faded nature perhaps suits the subject
These shops are on the A6 which runs through Belper. The railway used
to run to Manchester but that line was
closed shortly after I first used it in 1963. Trains run through to
Sheffield but don't stop, though local services still run to Matlock and
Nottingham via Derby
Previously we have stayed at the Lion Hotel, but this weekend it was fully
booked
The A6 wasn't very busy on a Sunday morning
Therail replacement bus took us to Derby, where we had to get a train
to Birmingham and change there for Reading
THe train was packed but we had reserved seats. I took a couple of pictures
as it approached Birmingham New St
going past the first teminus of the line from London - which I think is
to be re-used for HS2 if it ever arrives.
