Campaigners met in the park at Sutton. Some had posters and placards
for the 70th birthday of the NHS
and people were signing the giant birthday cards
But there were also plenty of placards calling for the local hospitals
- St Helier, Queen Mary's and Epsom to
remain open and offereing a full range of services
Queen Mary's Hospital is a children's hospital on the same site as
St Helier
and there were banners too
including the main 'Keep Our St Helier Hospital' banner
as well as those for the Labour party and the Communication Workers
Union
and Unison. The march went north up the pedestrianised Sutton High
St, past stalls and shops
a drummer drew shoppers attention to the march, and many applauded

'Hospital cuts Kill - Help Us Stop This Nightmare!'
Many on the street seemed surprised to learn their local hospitals
were under threat
