Don't destroy Elephant & Castle

Southwark, London. Tue 16 Jan 2018

People begin to gather for the protest

including local campagners from the Aylesbury Esate, currently being demolished by Southwark Council

People had brought 'pink elephant' flags

and the 'Fight for the Aylesbury' banner

A woman hands out a poster she has produced about developers Delancey and Southwark Council

Tanya Murat publicises a public meeting against demolishing the Aylesbury Estate

'Homes for Londoners NOT Assets for Investors'. Many of Londons new appartments are not lived in but simply bought for investment

Southwark Lib-Dem Councillor Maria Linforth-Hall is one of the councillors against the plan

A woman speaks for the many Latin American market traders and the community

Labour Councillor Robert Fleming is another councillor against the plan

'Where will we Go?' 'Elephant & Castle is oaur home - No social cleansing in Southwark.

Socialist Worker placards 'Homes for People Not For Profit' and the Revolutionary Communist Group banner, Housing Is A Right'

Left wing groups are among those calling for an end to social cleansing and for social housing to provide homes for people

Students at the London College of Communication are appalled at the university's support for the plans - and some have occupied part of their buidling

The march starts, but there are high winds, particularly close to the tall buildings and the banner is hard to carry

And they walk along the road towards Borough and the council offices in Tooley St

 'Social Housing NOT Luxury Flats'

A bicycle powered sound system at the front of the march

and campaigners from the Aylesbury Estate

Delancey will make £153m but claim they can't afford to build any real social housing in the scheme

Save our spaces - places like the Elephant are vital to the Latin American and other BME groups

 'Gentrification is Racist Sexist Whiteness;

'Protect our Barrios - FIght Gentrification'. As well as the Elephant the Latin Village at Seven Sisters is under threat from Haringey Council
