Cleaners invade Barbican Centre

Barbican Centre, London. Sat 16 May 2015

The protesters walk through the city to meet other supporters a short distance from the Barbican

and then march towards the Barbican centre

They wait for everyone to catch up just around a corner from the centre

and then rush in, too fast for the couple of security guards on duty to stop them

They make for a central point inside the Barbican Centre

and hold a noisy protest there

with shouting for Sick Pay and trade union rights

and blowing of vuvuzelas and whistles

and some short speeches to tell everyone around how poorly the Barbican treats its essential staff who keep the place clean

The Barbican Centre tries to wash its hands of the responsibilty towards people who work there by using

Mitie to employ them. But their contract with Mitie ought to include safeguards for the workers in the Barbican Centre

and some other employers have insisted on these as a condition of bidding for service contracts like this.
