A curious building in the Market Place which was perhaps meant as
an observation platform, but the stairs
are now blocked
Lloyds Bank building dates from around 1700
Sadler Gate and Iron Gate - which leads to Derby Cathedral
Jorrocks and the building to the left were built in 1603. Once a coaching
inn, it closed in 1853. Now half is Jorrocks bar
Memorial to Joseph Wright, Derby's famous painter, though relatively
few of his works are found outside Derby. He was born in a building close
to here as the plaque states. The cathedral has the second tallest
Perpendicular tower in England and can be seen for miles around
Bonnie Prince Charlie came to Derby in 1745 in his unsuccesful attempt
to reclaim the crown
The Derby Silk Mill was Britain's first modern factory, built in 1717
- 1721 and is the southern end of the
Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site
An ice rink in the market place with the rather boring Council House (1942)
behind.
