Vigil for Fazel Chegeni
Australia House, London. Tue 8 Nov 2016
People prepare for the vigil calling for Justice for Fazel Chegeni,
an Iranian Kurd
who escaped from immigration detention on Christmas Island and was
found dead
He had been accepted as a refugee in Australia because he had been
arrested and tortured in Iran
but was prosecuted for a trivial fight at a detention centre canteen
and his visa was revoked
after Australia passed new draconian laws about refugees
Imprisoned on remote Christmas Island and in indefinite detention
he was stateless and rejected by Australia
and suffering from mental health problems
many who met him and wrote case records sympathised with him, but
the
system was inflexible and would do nothing to help him
he escaped from the detention centre
and two days later his dead body was found
