Housing is a Mental Health Issue

Stratford, London. Sat 21 May 2016

'Your Dream Home Awaits You' a bus advert for a property show at Olympia. Only for the rich.

'An Attack on our housing IS an attack on our mental health'.

'Labour Mayor of Newham - Sheriff of Newham - Robin the poor' Robin Wales

A man who came to speak against the protest - and didn't know that it was the Thatcher Government that ended
the need for social housing to be built to Parker Morris standards. Perhaps he is a part of the Newham Labour council?
He said he had been rehoused and had a very nice place now. Is he the only one in Newham? Certainly he had
no idea about how the housing crisis is working now - and how regeneration has been changed by a collusion
between developers and councils - including Labour councils in Newham, Southwark, Lambeth etc - into a process
of getting rid of existing populations and bringing in those who can afford market rents, with very little social or even 'affordable' housing.

 The short march sets off

and as it approaches a new high-rise block, a strong gust rips the banner into two

The march stops briefly outside the new tower, but it's too windy there to hang around

and hard to hold the banner in the wind

'Spectacular 36 storey tower' The prices are probably stratospheric, but 98% are sold

A 1 bed flat to be completed here in Spring 2017 was recently on offer at a bargain £420,000 - the market price was £470,000

Over 270 or the 307 flats here were sold 2 years before completion, around 60% to foreign buyers

For most of the buyers these flats are investments, not homes. Meanwhile Newham ships out its population who

need social housing to Basildon or Machester or Birimingham or Crwaley or Hastings - despite them largely

wanting to stay in the area they know, where they have always lived, have jobs, frineds, courses, schools.

Labour councils like Newham are massively failing to provide housing for Newham people at the moment,
and Focus E15 are bringing that failure to public notice.
