Stratford Stratford Bus Station Royal Air Force Bomber Command Memorial sculptor Philip Jackson represents a bomber crew on their return from a mission The memorial was opened in 2012. There was no memorial before this as many felt that the bombing of civilians was a war crime, whether by Germans or British etc. There is particular criticism of the raids towards the end of the war aimed at flattening large areas of German cities rather than at particular military targets. The memorial is supposed to be for as well as civilians of all nations killed during raids as well as the aircrew, but it is hard to see that it is so. The top of the building housing the Hard Rock Cafe overlooks Green Park. It was apparently built in 1905 as a car showroom possibly selling Rolls-Royce motors, but I can find no record on-line to confirm this,, nor any explanation of the monogram which seems to include the letters D, J and L. Men were gilding the gates to Green Park - pressing down gold leaf onto them. The streets of London may not be paved with gold, but these park gates have some on them. It's real gold, though so thin you can see light through it. Boring new buildings replace boring old ones on Piccadilly |
