You could make your own thaumotrope in three easy steps

or pose to with the props in front of a large camera containing a rather smaller one tethered to a Mac

 

 

 

and clearly people were having fun doing so

 

 
 
Back on Clarence St a densely packed crowd waited around a bandstand for the switching on of the lights

 

Some with those balloons

  

 

After the lights were switched on there were some flares and coloured lights

 

 

 

 

 

Though the lights themselves seemed a little disappointing.
But we didn't stop to watch the end of the event and the crowds were less dense as we made our way to the pub.
