Assisted Suicide Debate lobbies

Old Palace Yard, Westminster. Fri 11 Sep 2015

'Not dead yet' campaigners against the assisted suicide bill opposite Parliament

and next to them those in favour of the bill who call 'Give me Choice'

Two protesters in wheelchairs hold posters '86% of disabled people support choice for dying people'

'Give me choice over my death'

'MPs need the guts to change the law'

On the other side of a barrier were those against the bill. One held a large coffin and hid behind it as I tried to photograph him

and there was a giant puppet of a judge holding a syringe

Also against the bill were a number oof prominent supporters of DPAC. Paula Peters holds a poster 'Assist us to live, not to die'

There were some quiet arguments across the barrier between the two sides

and at least some of those protesting against the bill thought changes were needed, but not those proposed

Several of the DPAC protesters against the bill told me they had changed their mind because of the ending of the Independent Living Fund
which they think will mean much more pressure on the disabled who can no longer live independently to commit suicide

'Beware the Silppery Slope' said a message on the judge's head
