Deptford to Greenwich

Deptford and Greenwich, Thu 9 Oct 2014

Ahoy Sailing Centre and Deptford Green. There is now a riverside path on what was the power station site

 Deptford Power Station jetty

The estate on the power station site is called Millennium Quay

On the corner of Deptford Creek is a monument to Peter the Great who spent some time at Deptford drinking and hell-raising

when he was supposedly studying shipbuilding here for 3 months in 1698. John Evelyn who he was lodging with at Sayes Court

got rather annoyed when his Russian mates pushed the comatose drunk Peter in a wheelbarrow through his

holly hedge and ruined it. There are now large numbers of students living in Deptford, but they are much better behaved.

The monument in Glaisher St is by Russian sculptor Mikhail Shemyakin

The jester with astronomical instruments is perhaps telling us that the visit and study was not too serious

but frankly I think it's an incredible bit of kitsch

and a failry obsure Russian joke.

I think the building work is to make a footbridge across the creek

The base for a footbridge across the creek that is being built
