Another path, Rockside Steps, leads down back towards Wellington Road
and has some good views of Smedley's Hydro and other parts of Matlock
Old Matlock is at left and I think Starkholmes above it
The view was rather obscured by the light rain
steps take you down to Wellington St
The Tram Depot which included the boiler house and stationary steam
engine which pulled the trams up the hill
The cable linked pairs of trams, one going up and the other going
down acting as a counterweight to reduce
the power needed
Rockside hydro was opened by a former patient of Smedley's in 1863,
but greatly expaned in this building in
1901-05 . It was designed by leading architects and planners Sir Raymond
Unwin and Barry Parker, members
of the Arts and Craft Movement, best known for their work on Garden Cities.

The new side of Matlock Bridge - enlarged to over double its width
in 1904 - the join is clearly viisble in the arch
and the old side. In the November 2019 floods the water came almost
up to the top of the arches
