	Head of the River Race Mortlake & Barnes, London. March 31, 2007 The River Thames at Staines is calm and relatively narrow.
	By Chiswick it is much wider and tidal. Although there was a strong wind, this reach was fairly calm.


			Around 40 or the 420 crews in the marshalling area upstream of the start. The Chief Marshall on Chiswick Bridge checks by radio that everything is ready before giving the order to start
			Boats line up in starting order, indicated by their numbers. Leander was last year's winner and so is No 1. Led by Leander, the boats come up to the starting point Leander moves up towards the start Boats 5-13 lined up along the course Oxford Brookes University I, one of the crews that failed to finish the race.
